INEC TO PARTNER NITDA FOR E-NIGERIA CONFERENCE  - 

- AS REPORTED IN THE INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is to partner with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in organizing the e-Nigeria conference, an annual event that focuses on trends and developments in the global Information, Communication Technology industry (ICT).

Acting Chairman of the Commission, Mrs Amina Bala Zakari, disclosed this yesterday when she received the Director General/CEO of NITDA, Engr. Olu Peter Jack. The DG was accompanied by a team of the organization’s Directors.

 While accepting the invitation to partner NITDA on this year’s edition of the Conference tagged: “Towards an Effective Electoral Process in Nigeria: the Role of ICT Local Content and Information Security”, Mrs Amina Zakari enthused that the partnership will be beneficial not only to both organizations, but will equally appeal to: a “cross section of discerning and relevant Information Technology experts as well as other stakeholders in the Nigerian democratic project”.

Stressing the importance of ICT in nation building, the Acting Chairman explained that “the achievements recorded in the 2015 general elections were made possible by the introduction of a number of electoral tools as well as the application of Information and Communication Technology in the management of the electoral process”.

Mrs Amina Zakari expressed the Commission’s willingness to deploy new and sustainable technologies in improving the electoral process. She said : “as we commence a new electoral circle, the Commission and staff are very enthusiastic about having conversations, engagements, discussions, research and conferences by stakeholders and other critical onlookers that seek to provide useful insights, produce information and knowledge that can deepen the understanding and deployment of new and sustainable technologies in order to improve our electoral system”. 

The Acting Chairman of INEC assured the DG of NITDA and his delegation of the Commission’s utmost support and partnership towards the success of the conference.

Earlier, Engr. Olu Peter Jack had explained that that the purpose of their visit was to share NITDA’s mandate as well as to state their intention to partner with INEC on the forthcoming annual e-Nigeria event.

He said: “Arising from the gains of the peaceful elections that we experienced in Nigeria with, and understanding that part of NITDA’s mandate is to build capacity and support both public and private sector in ensuring that the right quality and type of ICT infrastructures are deployed”.

The NITDA Director General buttressed the need for collaboration with INEC in order to get credible people into leadership positions through the deployment of the right ICT tools for credible elections.  

He explained that “the 2015 edition of the e-Nigeria Conference is targeted towards improving our electoral process through ICT deployment, to leverage on the experiences of other nations that have effectively deployed ICT to enhance credible and successful electoral processes in their countries and develop appropriate mechanisms that would enhance our own electoral process in Nigeria”.
