Sokoto Council donates N820,000 relief materials to flood victims NAN-H-17 Materials


Gwadabawa ( Sokoto State), Aug. 8, 2015 (NAN)
Gwadabawa Local Government in Sokoto State on
Saturday donated relief materials worth N820,000
to flood victims.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that
each of the beneficiaries got a bag of rice, a bag
of millet, a rubber mat, a blanket and N 5,000
cash.
On Aug. 1, many towns including Gwadabawa,
Mammande, Gidan-Doagza, Kililawa and
Galadunchin-Tsabre, were ravaged by flood, but
no life was lost
Speaking on the occasion, the Chairman of the
Council’s Caretaker Committee, Alhaji Aminu Aya,
noted that 65 of the victims from Gwadabawa,
headquarters of the local government, benefitted
in the first tranch.
He assured other victims from four other
communities that they would get their own relief
materials within the next 48 hours.
``The gesture is not in any way compensation,
but an attempt to alleviate their sufferings.
``We have since reported the disaster to the state
government through the State Emergency
Management Agency which has promised to come
to their aid.
``We are also appealing to the National
Emergency Management Agency, other donor
agencies, corporate organisations and well-
meaning individuals to assist them.’’
The Secretary to the local government, Alhaji
Ibrahim Shuni, who promised further assistance,
however, warned the beneficiaries against selling
the items.
Also speaking, Alhaji Abdullahi Rabah, the
Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee
on Emergency and Disaster Management, lauded
the council’s gesture.
A spokesman for the beneficiaries, Alhaji Abdullahi
Faransi, thanked the local government for the
gesture. (NAN)
