Exclusive: Constitutional Crisis at INEC

Tenure of Acting Chairman Zakari Expires
Ayodele Afolabi, Abuja – Amina Zakari, the
acting Chairman of the Independent National
Electoral Commission, INEC is in constitutional
crisis as the tenure her tenure as National
Commissioner ended on 21st July, 2015.
As at press time, Zakari has not bowed out
fueling concern that rule of law is being
trampled upon.
An All Progressives Congress, APC chieftain who
spoke on condition of anonymity said that from
21st July, she ceased to be a member of INEC
unless the senate approves another tenure for
her.
“She ought to have handed over to the most
senior National Commissioner who will continue
to carry on the function of acting chairman.
“What is happening in INEC is not only
unconstitutional, but it is like setting a bad
precedent.
“Recall that this is supposed to be era of
change from impunity. But for her to continue in
that office a day longer may give impetus to
what the opposition PDP has been saying.
“The President must make haste and appoint a
substantive INEC Chairman by following the laid
down constitutional procedure or direct Zakari to
hand over to the most senior National
Commissioner”.
