•We'll back peaceful use of nuclear weapons--Buhari
The Iranian government has pledged to support Nigeria in the fight against the Boko Haram terrorist group.
The Iranian Vice President for Executive Affairs, Mohammed Shariatmadari, made the promise on Wednesday when he visited President Buhari at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Shariatmadari said the Iranian government would support Nigeria in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
He noted that "the government of President Hassan Rouhani of Iran advocates moderation and departure from any form of extremism".
The visiting Iranian vice president also congratulated President Buhari on his election.
In his remarks, President Buhari said Nigeria would continue to support the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and human development only.
He said Nigeria welcomed the new agreement between Iran and the six world powers on nuclear programme, describing it as a major step to ensure peace and stability in the Middle East.
According to him, as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Nigeria looks forward to the faithful implementation of the terms of the agreement by all concerned parties.
President Buhari received an invitation from Shariatmadari to attend an upcoming summit of Gas Exporting Countries in Tehran.
